New York State Moose Association 3 on 3 Youth Basketball Tournament  See the Photos Click Here

In three years the Moose “March Madness” youth tournament has gone from zero bidders to the LARGEST indoor basketball tournament of its kind, in New York State. This year Jamestown Moose and the Lakewood YMCA hosted 119 teams a total of 452 players from grades 3 thru 12. We returned 8 additional teams applications because they arrived too late to include. The State Moose Tournament would have had over 500 kids play.

Friday night’s “pizza and practice party” at the Y was a huge success. Over 600 players and parents were treated to music and open basketball courts for pick-up games and free pizza and drinks. They went thru 80 large pizzas and gallons of sport drinks. 97 teams picked up there Tournament

t-shirts that night. It was a great Family Event.

Saturday play started at 9:00 a.m. on twelve indoor courts and went until 8:00 p.m. Two hundred fifty four games ( 254 ) were played in eleven hours. Twelve divisions of boys and girls teams competed in six age groups.

NYSMA along with Cummins Engine and United Refinery were major sponsors of this event. Basketball court sponsor were Jamestown Lodge and Chapter, Lakewood/Celeron Lodge and Chapter , Westfield Lodge , Falconer Lodge , Hornell Lodge , Dansville Lodge , Wellsville Lodge , NY District II .along with several local venders. All these Moose Lodges also sponsored teams in the competition.

With sponsorship fees and player team donations and snack shack   we are proud to report that a total of $ 17,780.00 was generated by this event for 2010. With the 2009 donation of $13,734 added, the two year total donation to the Jamestown YMCA Youth Programs is $31,514.

With the expanded interest in our NYSMA Tournament we feel that next years tournament will be even larger .Plans are to expand to 16 indoor courts and limit the number of teams to 140.

This event took over 80 volunteers and hundreds of man hours from local Moose lodges and Chapters along with the YMCA staff and Members and Referees. It is my hope that more Moose Lodges will take the initiative to participate next year. Remember we are a family fraternity.
